Hills Upon Hills, Karsts Upon Karsts...

So here we are in Yangshuo, in the Guangxi province of China.  We've been here for just over a week. It's absolutely gorgeous. The little town is surrounded by karst peaks with the Li river running through it and the Yu Long river nearby. Many of you have probably already seen our pictures on Facebook so I won't post too many here.
We have been going rock climbing every other day. The climbing here is fantastic and can be easily accessed by bicycle. It's a lot of fun to ride around on a bike anyway because you really get to enjoy the scenery.

On our days off we have been exploring, hiking, biking and cooking...that's right- 2 days ago we took a Chinese cooking class. :) We learned to cook 5 dishes: cashew nut chicken, eggplant, stuffed vegetables, green vegetables and a local dish called beer fish (you have to get really really drunk before cooking....hahaha...just kidding :) )
Another fun thing about Yangshuo is that it sees a lot of tourists and is therefore lined with little cafes and restaurants which all have menus in English, which is sooooo good because Chinese food is actually really good if you know what you're ordering. So we've been able to enjoy a delicious amount of Kung Pao Chicken, dumplings, noodles and other Panda Express-like dishes. Western breakfasts are also abundant and quite a nice change from the rice and spicy toppings that are usually eaten.

Even though Yangshuo is really not your typical China, it has some aspects that are far from Western culture. The market for example is not for a weak stomach. It is loud, busy and full of what we would consider animal cruelty. Slaughtering, especially that of dogs is a shocking sight.

So yeah, our experience here has been interesting and fun so far. It's a really fun place to be. We are planning on doing a little bamboo raft trip up and down the river, a cormorant fishing trip and definitely lots more climbing. For more pictures check out our Facebook Photo Folders.

For the purpose of sharing our experience we have decided to post some market pictures.
WARNING!!! THE FOLLOWING IMAGES MAY BE DISTURBING TO YOU! IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO THIS KIND OF STUFF, DON'T SCROLL DOWN!!!
