A slice of Pai

Song Kran was fun, but… After a two or three days of being sopping wet all day long we decided to get out of Chiang Mai. Kathy said she really just felt like a slice of pie, so we went to Pai. Kathy just told me to write that.

On Tuesday we decided to try and get away from the water and see another city in the area. We went to Pai which was about three hours away by bus. It’s a tiny village up in the mountains that’s really popular among hippies and backpackers who are looking for a really relaxed place to stay for a couple months. It was fun. The city had a really cool feel to it and there was no traffic or huge buildings.

Unfortunately Song Kran was more widely celebrated than we had previously thought and we spent our time in Pai soaking wet as well. But we really had a good time. It’s a very relaxed and slow paced village (except for the hundreds of kids with buckets). We spent two nights there in a bungalow along the shore of a small river for five dollars a night.
We rented a scooter one day and visited some of the waterfalls in the area. On the way to one of the waterfalls we drove through a hilltribe village where all the people in town kept offering us opium as we drove past. Unfortunately poppy (for opium) is one of their main crops. We also saw some natural hot springs that were so hot I couldn’t even keep my hand in the water for more than two seconds.

The best part was that every night we found a different gigantic Huntsman spider in our bathroom. Awesome. No seriously, it was awesome.

So today we’re back in Chiang Mai. I have one class today and then Katharina has a couple tomorrow. Sorry this blog is kinda slow. Must be the Pai I ate for dinner last night… oh man, this just keeps getting better.

Oh, one of the coolest things was we went to a restaurant that had spicy banana flower salad. Kathy says it was the best thing she’s ever eaten. Next to all the other things she says were the best things she’s ever eaten.

Dan's going to be jealous when he sees the hammock photo. He's always talking about his hammock and his lack of hammock space. Pai looks like a nice relaxing place. I bet having a good time was as easy as Pai, you might say.
